Please use the Search button Before you post.
There Might Already Be a Forum Post that is the same as the one you want to make.

How to Search.

The Search tool is powerful,
but you should understand how it works to use it.

This is very important.
You can search for only an EXACT match.
be careful of blank space and punctuation.
UPPER or lower case is ignored.

A search for mac n cheese doesn't find just cheese, and it doesn't find just mac, it won't find mac-n-cheese
it will only find EXACTLY Mac n Cheese or mac N cheese or MAC N CHEESE or any combination of upper and lower case characters of MaC n cHeEsE
case is ignored

Your search must be at least 3 Characters long.

Then you can set up the Search options / Filter...
using the options will LIMIT the results you see..

If you Set the options / filter to strong, might get no results at all..

About the results:
The list of results, are links to a forum Thread that contains what you searched for.

The Links DO NOT take you Directly to the specific Post with the search result in it.
The Link Only opens the Thread.
It is then up to you to browse through the thread to find the results.

Threads with Multiple pages
You might have to look on different pages to find it.

I want to find all posts with "Maggie" in them:

It is important to set Within:
this is what Forum threads to Look in
and also set Search in:
it controls to search Just Topic Titles, or Titles and all posts, or Just posts?

To search the Entire Forum, in Every Topic, and in every post

Within: = All Sections
Search in: = Topic Titles and Posts

the last three search Options / filters I leave set as defaults.

I will get up to 20 results..

Here are a few of the results I get..
Each result is a link to the Forum Thread that Contains what I searched for.
Within that Thread my Search results will be Highlighted so it stands out.

But this is Important:
The link is NOT DIRECTLY to the results.
The Link is Only to the thread...
You have to browse the thread to find the results on your own.

Here I followed a link from my search results..
when I browse or scroll down the page, I see my Highlighted results.

You should take Note that Search does not look at the Poll Text.
only the Text in the Topic Title, or the Text in the Posts.

What happens when the thread has More than one Page?
The search results could be on Page 1, or it could be on Page 10?

In this case I use my Browsers built in Find or Search Feature to come to the rescue.

I follow the Results Link..
Then I open my Browsers Find, and type in the same search characters.

My browser will now tell me if the results are on the page or not.

This search results thread has 4 pages to it, instead of scrolling down through the page,
I use my browsers Find feature. ( I'm using Google Chrome )

I can see that there are 0 or no results on Page 1.
So I can just go directly to page 2, and again use my browsers Find
feature to tell me if there is match on that page or not.

Please note, that when I advance to page 2, Totems
search will no longer highlight the results any more.

Again, My Browsers Find Feature comes to the Rescue here..

No results on Page 1 of 4, so I browse to the next page...

With the Help of My Browsers Find feature, I was able to pretty quickly go through page 2, 3, and 4.
My Browsers Find told me there weer no results on pages 2 and 3.
When I got to page 4, it showed me there were 3 matches..

Since changing pages, turned off Totem's Highlighting, My Browsers Find Feature again comes to the rescue, and it adds it's own highlighting.

While Totem's Forum Search function, by itself, is a very powerful tool.
the combination of using Totem's search, and your browsers Find feature,
Together make it easy to locate what you are searching for.

You only need to use your browsers find tool, when the results are on a thread with more then several pages.

In a perfect world, Totem's search would Link you Directly to the First results in the thread. Even take yo to the correct page, and correct post.

But the world is not perfect, so we have to learn to use the TOOL that we have, and how the Tools can make things easier for us.

I know this tutorial was several posts long..
But I see so many "search doesn't work posts"
That I wanted to pass along a little info on how to use the search tool.

Please try it out, and use it often...
It might seem ***** at first, but after you use the search and your browsers find once or twice
It becomes very easy..
